The weekend before last we packed up the kids and dogs and decided to camp somewhere we had never been. We drove up north past the quaint little town of Granby to Denver Creek Campground. When we arrived we weren’t that impressed so we decided to head up a forest road and find a free spot in the national forest. And boy did we find something good! This spot had a nice fire ring, some logs that were perfect for tables and a noisy little stream just down the hill to lull us to sleep at night. Camping in the forest as opposed to a paid campground is the way to go. The dogs can roam free and there’s not a soul around. Here are some shots from the trip. Stay Fly.

No leash necessary. This dude loves to run.

This little creek flowed about 50 yards away from our tent. No luck fishing here but we did have some luck at the bigger creek down the road.

I don’t know what it is, but there is something about catching a fish on a fly that you tied yourself. Even if it’s a classic pattern like a pheasant tail nymph or a BWO, the fact that you created it is a great feeling. Tying your own bugs is like a fly fishing side hobby which gives you something else to do that is fly fishing related when you can’t be out on the water. It may not be for everyone, but I suggest you give it a try and see if you like it. Who knows you might want to join the club! If you follow me on instagram, then it’s likely that you have seen some of the see pictures there, but here’s some shots from some recent tying sessions. Stay fly.

Spring is here and the flowers are blooming!

[See image gallery at theflytrout.com]

The weekend before last was cold and rainy so we had to come up with some indoor activities like fly tying class.

[See image gallery at theflytrout.com]

Some of the finished flies with a sweet looking sticker.

[See image gallery at theflytrout.com]

Drowning my sorrows because I can’t go fly fishing.

[See image gallery at theflytrout.com]

Printed a special edition too cool for school shirt for a graduation present.

[See image gallery at theflytrout.com]

And finally we hit the local pond to catch us some bluegills. No fish, but it was nice to get out and start teaching the little guy how to use a fly rod!

When you’re stuck inside and can’t go fishing what does one do? Watch the latest Real Housewives of Beverly Hills? Or maybe read a well-written novel? Nope. The answer we were looking for was “tie some flies”. We also would have accepted “bust out the fly-tying tools” or “make artificial fish food.” Thanks for playing.
